Q&A: Glimpse Into (Retail) Fashion: SFFAMA Interview with Sheri Calvert of Skunk Funk, San Francisco

SFFAMA: What do you do for Skunk Funk?

sc: I do the Public Relations for the brand as well as running the San Francisco Flagship and soon to be Haight Street location.

SFFAMA: Can you tell us what is your daily schedule like in the store?

sc: Things vary. I check to see the store is neat, clean, organized, well and merchandised. I then check the sales and try to come up with new ways to spark people’s interest, like put a rack of coats outside if the weather is dim. I also do either an event or a sale once a month, so I am also thinking of new creative themes etc. Once a week I go through the store and check to see what is selling and what should be marked down. I then put together a store order to keep new merchandise flowing through the store.

SFFAMA: How did you land your gig with Skunk Funk?

sc: I worked with the importers at another wholesale fashion company.

SFFAMA: What is different about Skunk Funk fashion compared to other retail designers out there?

sc: Skunkfunk is cool because it is functional fashion. The clothing is fashion forward, yet wearable. The garments are constructed with the consumer in mind. You will find our garments are comfortable, durable, with good cuts, fits, and added detail.

SFFAMA: What are challenges in your store operation given the current economic climate?

sc: I have to come up with new, interesting ways to keep people flowing into the store. This is why I do an event or a sale once a month. Once a month is good, this way we do not harass our customer list with multiple emails, which can get very annoying, but we keep them interested. I also make sure our everyone on staff is well versed in good customer service skills. We bring new merchandise in once a week and change up the floor every 2 weeks, this way our regulars find new things. I always keep a large sale section and put $20 racks out front.

SFFAMA: How important is customer service? And, how do you apply it in a daily basis?

sc: Customer service is very important. Everyone who walks in the store is personally greeted. We show them where all the new merchandise is, let them know where they can find sale items and ask them if they have a particular garment in mind. It is important to be helpful, not pushy. I keep it friendly.

SFFAMA: Why is "fashion" important?

sc: Fashion is important because it reflects one's identity, or an identity that they would like to portray. It is the first thing you notice when meeting someone new and usually the last thing that sticks in your mind.

SFFAMA: We heard that you are opening a new flagship store at The Haight. What can we expect from this location?

sc: It is going to be bigger, better and the ambiance will be clean and refreshing. Think green and white with lots of foliage and no right angles...You must come see for yourself. It will be open early December.

SFFAMA: What would you advise to a budding designer or retail entrepreneur considering opening a retail business?

sc: Location, location and price points. This economy has created very savvy shoppers who will only buy if it happens to be in front of them and it is a good deal.

SFFAMA: Which item is the best seller in your store this year? And, who's buying it?

sc: Our best selling categories are coats, jackets, and dresses. Men and women buy coats year round in San Francisco. People like our outerwear because it is good quality, has fantastic detailing and is sold at a reasonable price. Women like our dresses because they fit well, hug in all the right places and come in variations of fabric and colors. This makes it easier for women to find the perfect dress.

SFFAMA: What do you think is going to be the next big thing in fashion?

sc: DROP CROTCH SHORTS AND JUMPERS!

Owen Geronimo, local event producer and one of the driving forces behind the re-launch of San Francisco Fashion Week, sat down with Style Wylde to discuss the local industry, and his upcoming event Fashion Feud.

SW: What is Fashion Feud?

Owen: Fashion Feud is a contest, sponsored by SCION^®similar to a challenge on Project Runway on stage, where the designer contestants are assigned a model and have one hour to create an outfit with the materials they have been given. After the hour is over the Models will walk the runway in the newly designed pieces and the audience will vote for a winner with applause.

SW: When is it?

Owen: There will be three different dates, the first is This Tuesday September 29^th, withAlexandria Von Bromseen and Ashton Miyako competing. The second is October 27^thwith Chanel Rosales and Julia Meeks competing, and the third is November 17^th with Eva Heule and Gail B Shrive competing. In January we will have a final date, where each of the three winners [from the previous rounds] will compete for the grand prize.

Owen: All of the designers needed to be local SF Bay Area based. Other than that, we wanted to have a variety of designers with different backgrounds, so we chose based on skill, they had to truly be able to sew , something not all designers do,

and current level of business. While some of the designers such as Alexandria are more well known, we also have a couple of really fresh faces.

SW: What made you decide to do Fashion Feud in San Francisco?

Owen: I was actually approached by Scion after I started the San Francisco Merchant Alliance, and I thought it would be a great way to promote this local design and art pool, which I know is very talented, but doesn’t always get a lot of media attention.

Owen: The SFMA is a social-media site for the local fashion community which connects, local crafters, designers, merchants and style gurus.

SW: What made you decide to start the SFMA?

Owen: Well, I have always loved fashion. I grew up in Hawaii, and my family didn’t have a lot of money, and I couldn’t go out and buy a lot of designer outfits, so I made my own, and they were very popular with my classmates. . . From there I continued in the industry and launched my own couture line in the 1990s… but eventually real-life pressures, being a dad etc, came along and I decided to put my passion and creativity aside and began working more in the business world, in real estate, and a side business as a curator for a few local galleries.

SW: Real Estate, ouch.

Owen: yeah, well when this whole economy fell apart, it was really an opportunity for me. I had a chance to look around and realize that I wasn’t going to be writing mortgages anymore. I had time to think about what I really wanted to do, and I knew I wanted to get back into the fashion industry.

SW: So why get involved with fashion-event production?

Owen: Well, like I said I know there are a lot of talented designers in the SF Bay Area, and I know how hard it is to break into the industry, I tried to do it myself. I really just wanted to start making connections, and building a community for all these talented people.

SW: Do you think there is a geographical bias towards designers living outside of NYC?

Owen: Yes, definitely. It’s so difficult to get your name out there. Stores don’t want to see you until you have major production capabilities, but to do that you need backing, to get backing you need to be seen, to be seen you need connections, but connections are incredibly difficult to make, there are so many obstacles.

SW: Are those obstacles the big road blocks for young designers starting out? What do you see as the biggest challenges young designers face?

Owen: Well the business end of things can be very hard for designers who are more creative in thinking. You need to have a strong background in business, and you have to not let ego, and jealousy get the best of you. That is a big challenge everyone has to face, when starting their own fashion business.

Get Your 'Playa' Fashion at 'Beyond The Fence' Trunk Show

I'm befuddled with the word "Playa", it is not because English is my second language but how the term is being used nowadays. The word "playa" is now synonymous to anything Burning Man. I know, it's means "beach" and for a Burning Man reveler, the word in question is very much a given. I view these fashion ensembles as immature 'rave' outfits, in other words... they're too costumy for my taste. I personally prefer a "Mad Max" inspired outfit as more fitting fashion statement for the popular event in the desert. To satisfy your "Playa" fashion craving, 'Beyond The Fence' trunk show is on August 15th at Mighty, located at 119 Utah, San Francisco.
